Thredup

Thredup is the largest online thrift store. It is an online platform used to sell secondhand clothes. You can see casual clothing brands like Gap or Old Navy or higher-end brands like Prada and Michael Kors. You won’t need to take pictures or list your items. Thredup will take care of all of that for you.

All you have to do is order the free clean-out bag, send your clothes to Thredup, and let them do the work. A style pro at Thredup will then inspect and authenticate your items. They will take pictures of your clothes for you.

When the item is sold, you can get paid through Stripe or Paypal. You can also receive Thredup credit. Any items that don’t sell Thredup will donate to the charity of your choice. Thredup will give you $5.00 for every clean-out kit you donate to charity. If you want your unaccepted clothes back, you will have to pay $10.99. Thredup has stated they only accept about 40% of the clothes submitted.

Swap.com

Swap.com is an online consignment shop that will sell your used baby clothes, maternity clothes, purses, shoes, and accessories. Swap.com has a unique premier sellers program for consistently selling high-quality items. You must fill out an application and send your clothes to Swap.com to apply for the premier program. If you meet the criteria, you will be invited to join the program. You can sell items on Swap.com even if you are not a premier member.

The Swap.com selling team will select only the highest quality items. You will need to print your pre-paid shipping label and mail your items to Swap.com’s headquarters. When your clothes arrive at headquarters, a quality assurance team will look over your items for any holes, stains, or foul odors.

The clothes must be freshly laundered. You can choose to have any unaccepted items sent back or recycled. Swap.com charges $9.00 to mail your clothing items back to you. If they accept your clothes, the staff at Swap.com will promote them. You will be paid a commission on the final sale price. You can receive cash, a check, or credit as your payment method. You must have at least a $10.00 balance to cash out. There is no minimum required, though, to use your payment as store credit.

Poshmark

Poshmark is where people can buy and sell men, women, and children’s clothing items. Some women even choose to sell their wedding gowns on Poshmark. First, you will want to create an account and a listing on the Poshmark app. Take quality pictures of your clothes and upload a description.

Set your price, which you can change at any time. You can even offer private discounts to interested sellers. Users can make counteroffers on Poshmark. You can create discounts for customers who bundle items or promote free shipping. If you do charge shipping, the buyer is responsible for paying.

Poshmark has a $2.95 fee for all sales less than $15.00. There is also a fee of 20% on sales of more than $15.00. Poshmark will provide you with a pre-paid shipping label and a pre-paid address label. All you have to do is drop off the package at the post office.

Tradesy

Tradesy accepts women’s luxury and designer clothing items. Tradesy is always looking for the most modern fashion styles. Tradesy will sell your clothing, handbags, shoes, and accessories. They also mainly sell only big brand names like Gucci or Prada. You will be sent a pre-paid, pre-addressed shipping kit.

After your items are sold, you can withdraw your money via PayPal, your checking or debit account, or credit. Sometimes you may have to wait until 21 days to receive your money after a sale. There is a 2.9% fee applied to transfer money.

Credit is commission-free. Tradesy does charge a fee of 19.8% for items over $50.00. There is a flat rate of $7.50 for items under $50.00. You set the price, and the customer will pay for the shipping.

The RealReal

The RealReal will first have you create an account. After making the account, you will select the designer brands you are looking to sell. There are a few different options to send your clothes into The RealReal.

One way is to schedule an in-home pickup. You can also ship your clothes directly to The RealReal using a pre-paid label. No matter which way you choose, once The RealReal receives your clothes, they will set a price and prepare them for sale. The commission you earn depends on how much you sell. The RealReal has three different shoppers levels: VIP, Icon, and Insider. Certain brands like Gucci and Christian Loutbitton will even earn you a bonus!

Your payment can be received either by check or direct deposit. Any unaccepted items can be sent back to you or donated at no extra cost.

eBay

eBay was created in 1995 and has since earned itself a reputation as an online auction site. eBay is great for those who are interested in selling clothes. Make an account and select “Sell” on the eBay homepage.

Create a listing, then verify your details. Add a payment method to pay for any eBay fees quickly. Buyers can purchase items right away or bid on them. Either way, you will get paid immediately on Paypal or your credit card.

eBay fees can add up fast, so it might be best to charge more for items. That will help offset the cost. The downside of doing that is that you may lose out on sales or offers because the price is too high.

If possible, post pictures of you wearing the clothes you are selling. This will help buyers visualize the clothes on them, boosting your chances of a sale.

Find the right Price

People who are looking for used clothes are most likely looking for a deal. Try and find like items online and similarly price your items. Make sure to use competitive prices that still allow for a profit. Before cutting the price, if an item is not selling, consider changing the description or adding more pics. Use more than one platform of sale to maximize your sales.

Understand the Market

Do your research to find out what items sell best on what platforms. You may not want to sell something high-end on Poshmark if it would sell better on Tradesy. This works both ways. Lower-budget items like Old Navy or Target items will sell better on Poshmark.

Understand Expenses

Make sure to factor in your shipping and packaging costs when planning your expenses. Some large purchases may even require you to claim it on your taxes. If you find yourself spending more money than you are making, donate your clothes as it may not be worth the effort to sell them.

Spruce Items

You don’t need to get your clothes professionally cleaned, but they should be more than acceptable. To guarantee sales and offers, clean and iron any clothing items you are looking to sell—Buff out scuff marks on purses and shoes. Be transparent and honest and note any flaws about the product in the description.

Conclusion

Anyone can sell clothes on the internet. All you need is a good camera, wifi, and access to USPS or shipping services. You can use your profits from selling clothes to go on vacation or pay off debts. Treat yourself! If you aren’t comfortable selling clothes online, you can always have a tag sale at home!
